Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce distress. These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily life, relationships, and work or academic performance.

Common Obsessions:

  • Fear of contamination or germs
  • Excessive doubt or need for reassurance
  • Intrusive aggressive or taboo thoughts
  • Preoccupation with order, symmetry, or perfection

Common Compulsions:

  • Excessive cleaning or handwashing
  • Checking locks, appliances, or tasks repeatedly
  • Counting, tapping, or repeating words silently
  • Arranging objects in a precise order

Causes and Risk Factors:

Genetics, brain chemistry imbalances, personality traits, and stressful life events may contribute to OCD.

Treatment:

OCD is treatable through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and medication such as SSRIs. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment improve long-term outcomes.
