Postpartum Depression Disorder

Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a serious mental health condition that affects some women after childbirth. Unlike the short-lived “baby blues,” which usually resolve within a week or two, PPD can persist for months if untreated. It is characterized by intense feelings of sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, and fatigue, making it difficult for new mothers to care for themselves and their baby.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Persistent low mood or excessive crying
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Sleep disturbances or extreme fatigue
  • Difficulty bonding with the baby
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or inadequacy
  • Changes in appetite
  • Thoughts of harming oneself or the baby

Causes and Risk Factors:

Hormonal changes, a history of depression, lack of support, stressful life events, and complications during pregnancy or delivery can contribute.

Treatment:

PPD is treatable through psychotherapy, support groups, and, if needed, medication under medical supervision. Early help is essential for recovery and healthy bonding.
